Check the requirements to hire a car and enjoy your trip with peace of mind.
To hire a car, you typically need to be at least 21 years old, hold a valid UK driving licence, and present a credit card in your name for the security deposit. If you’re hiring abroad, a valid passport is also necessary, and in many countries, an International Driving Permit (IDP) may be required in addition to your licence. Requirements can vary by destination, so it’s important to check the age limits and whether an IDP is needed before your trip.
The security deposit serves as a guarantee for the car hire company, ensuring the vehicle is returned in the same condition it was picked up. The amount is determined by the provider and, much like a hotel hold, this amount is released after the vehicle is returned without any issues. If you plan to use the same credit card for other holiday expenses, be aware that some of your available credit may be tied up during the hire period.
When you book through Rentcars, the base rate from the hire company is already included, along with optional vehicle protection if selected at checkout. For most international bookings, your rental will also include standard vehicle cover and third-party liability insurance, in line with local regulations.
You can choose to pay for your booking either at pick-up or at the time of booking. Paying at pick-up means you’ll settle the cost directly with the hire company when you collect the vehicle, based on the payment methods they accept and the local currency. Choosing to pay now lets you complete your reservation in advance, with the convenience of paying in British pounds using a credit or debit card, as well as digital wallet options.
