Palm Springs: An Oasis in The Californian Desert
A trip to Palm Springs transports you to the sunny Sonoran Desert. With a car rental, you can travel around the city, head into Joshua Tree National Park or go a bit further and visit L.A. or San Diego. Traffic in town is usually light, and I-10 gives you quick access to sights both east and west of the city.
Get a Good View
Driving over to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway should take about 15 minutes from downtown. You can take a relaxing ride up Chino Canyon to one of the peaks. Up top, there's a small museum, hiking trails and a restaurant so you can spend an hour or even a day here.
About 20 minutes south is Indian Canyons. This area, ancestral home of the Aqua Caliente group of Cahuilla Indians, is another popular place to hike and explore. There's a range of trails from an easy one-mile path to a strenuous 12-mile hike.
Learn About the Desert
At the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens, located about 20 minutes from town with your car rental, there are dozens of types of animals that are happy to be in the desert. There are also gardens to walk through and special events held throughout the year.
About 45 minutes north is the Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center. You can check in here, get a lay of the land and get advice from park rangers about how best to enjoy the park. You can camp, hike or simply take a drive and enjoy your car rental's air conditioner as you take in the sights.
Relax
Downtown and in neighborhoods including Las Palmas and Canyon Sands, there are restaurants, clubs and bars. Many of them are at resorts, which you can visit just for the evening.
If you're planning on visiting Palm Springs, remember to book your rental car soon so you can see the sights freely.
